FURTHER ADVANCE
MADE IN MADAGASCAR VICHY RESISTANCE FADING. WASTEFUL ROAD DEMOLITIONS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 10.50 a.m.) RUGBY, October 30. The General Officer Commanding in East Africa states that East African troops entered Fianarantsoa, the most important town in Southern Madagascar and recently the headquarters of the Vichy Governor, M. Annet, at 4 p.m. yesterday, and are now continuing their advance southward. Our troops have thus covered 260 miles since the capture of Antananarivo (the capital). The occupation of Fianarantsoa was preceded by a short engagement at Alakamisy. 16 miles to the north, in which our troops suffered very slight casualties and took 440 prisoners, including two lieutenantcolonels. M. Annet, with General Guillemet. commanding the Vichy troops in Madagascar has withdrawn to the south. It is not believed that the Vichy forces can any longer put up an effective, resistance to our advance, but the policy of road demolition and obstruction, which is damaging only to the island’s economy, is likely to continue.
