SOCIAL GATHERING PRESENTATIONS TO SOLDIERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) A most enjoyable and financially successful social dance was held in the hall on Friday night. The dance was organised by the local women’s division of the Farmers’ Union. Four humorous sketches were presented by the following junior members:—“My Engagement,” by Misses E. Hansen and E. Wallis; “The Old Maids,” by Misses M. Wright, H. Duncan, E. Hansen; "Skirts and Slacks,” by Misses Z. Hart and R. Jewitt and “The Story of Lady Godiva” by Misses E. Hansen and R. Jewitt. All the sketches were received with warm applause and the members deserve praise for the splendid ability shown. Mesdames Hansen and Welch rendered songs in a most acceptable manner. A cake donated by Mesdames Olsen and Watts was won by Mrs West, who handed it back to be sold, it being finally bought by Mr Watts. The novelty dances were won as follows: —Lucky spot. Miss Hart and Mr Bristain; Monte Carlo, Misses Hansen and Kitchen; statue waltz, Miss E. Wallis and Mr Q. Schofield. A home-made supper was handed round.

Mr Scott Raleigh, on behalf of the Patriotic Committee, presented Lieutenant Hislop, who was the guest of honour, with a cheque and Privates B. Churchouse and H. Robbie of Pongaroa with cigarettes. He wished them the best of luck. After having been accorded musical honours the soldiers suitably replied. Lieutenant Hislop, who had been schoolmaster here for six years, was also made a presentation on behalf of the present pupils by Mervyn Raleigh and the past' pupils by Miss P. Duncan. Dancing was then kept up till the early hours of the morning. Mr Barker was M.C. and the music was supplied by Mesdames Houlbrooke and Welsh and Miss Britland and Mr Barker. Personal Items. Mr H. Seymour is on a visit to Wellington. Mrs Scott Raleigh is visiting her sister, Mrs Ackland, of Wellington.
