RACING CONTROVERSY

RECORD OF WINNING RIDES IN BRITAIN. THOUSANDS OF POUNDS IN BETS INVOLVED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) LONDON, October 27. Thousands of pounds in bets are involved! in a controversy as to when the jockey, Gordon Richards, will this season beat Fred Archer’s total of winning rides, says the “Daily Mail.” Archer’s aggregate at first was believed to be 2,746 winners, but “Ruff’s Guide” gave the total as 2,748, and now, after further research gives Archer’s total as 2,749. Richards thus far in 1942 has ridden 63 winners, bringing his total to 2,739. Thus, with three more racing fixtures within the next nine days, involving eighteen possible mounts, Richards needs to ride eight, ten or eleven winners and a pretty dispute is likely if he succeeds in eight. One bookmaker has £lO,OOO in'volved.
