JAPANESE LOSSES
IN SOLOMONS BATTLE TWO WARSHIPS SUNK AT LEAST THREE OTHERS DAMAGED. INCLUDING BATTLESHIP. LONDON, October 27. Washington announces that two Japanese warships have been sunk and at least three others, including a battleship, have been damaged in the South-West Pacific. Two more Japanese cruisers and one aircraft-carrier are stated to have been hit. The Japanese on Guadalcanal 1 penetrated the American lines, but the enemy was thrown back and the United States forces regained their positions. The marines made small gains in heavy fighting at the western point of their lines.
