STATE THEATRE
“A YANK IN THE R.A.F.” “A Yank in the R.A.F.” will ,be finally shown tonight. “TOM BROWN’S SCHOOLPAYS.” The greatest school story ever written, “Tom Brown’s Schooldays,” will be shown at the State Theatre tomorrow night. In a most graphic manner it gives an excellent representation of school life in England during last century, and provides many situations which hold the Interest deeply on account of their excellent presentations. The fun, the sport, the ragging and the companionship associated with school life are all vividly portrayed. The story was written in 1857 by the late Judge Hughes, who was a strong supporter of the working classes, a leading member of the Christian Socialists along with Arnold, Thackeray, Maurice, Carlisle, Lowell and other prominent men in England, and who introduced the first Trades Union Bill) into the House of Commons. It is probably impossible to depict the schoolboy in this natural state and in a realistic manner, it is extremely difficult to portray him at all in such a way as to’ interest the adult. Yet this last was certainly achieved by Hughes in “Tom Brown’s Schooldays,” which did a great deal to fix the English concent of what a public school should be. George Hughes, his brother, was the original “Tom Brown,” and Dean Stanley the original “Arthur.”
