NAZI INFANTRY & TANK ATTACKS POSITION OF DEFENDERS STILL PRECARIOUS. INDIAN SUMMER WEATHER ' AIDS ENEMY. (By Telegraph-—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. October 26. The defenders’ position at Stalingrad is still precarious, and Moscow last night announced that the Germans, at the cost of huge losses, gained two more streets in a factory area. North-west of Stalingrad the Russians, conducting active operations 1 , improved their positions at two points. Today’s Moscow communique states: “Bitter fighting continues at Stalingrad. The Germans, after long artillery and mortar preparation, launched an attack with infantry and tanks on one of the factory districts. Our troops repelled the attack and inflicted heavy losses. Our artillery subjected the Germans’ further attacks to concentrated fire and decimated and put to flight a whole regiment of infantry, and destroyed 15 mortar batteries. “After fierce fighting, which included hand-to-hand action, the Germans managed to break through to the fringe of one of the factories. Our troops are fighting to annihilate the enemy group. Dispatches from Moscow last night all referred to freak Indian-summer weather which has favoured the Germans attacking Stalingrad during the past three days. The Moscow correspondent of “The Times” says that this has enabled a resumption of violent activity by the Luftwaffe, and there were rarely fewer than 50 dive-bombers over Stalingrad on Saturday. The Red October factory’s defences are proving exceptionally strong, and the Russians are shipping strong reinforcements across the Volga nightly. The Germans state that Marshal Timoshenko’s attacks against the panzer wall northwest of Stalingrad are becoming more violent. The Germans, in the colder weather, are persisting in their attempt to break through the river valley in the western Caucasus leading to the main highway, where they could cut off the Russians fighting on the coast. Intense air fighting has flared up anew, but the Russians are holding their own throughout the Caucasus. Both sides mention locally important fighting between the Don elbow and Leningrad, particularly in the Voronezh, Volkhov and Leningrad sectors. NO SLACKENING IN FURY OF CONFLICT. FREQUENT HAND TO HAND COMBAT (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) RUGBY, October 26. The violent fighting which was resumed in Stalingrad on an improvement in the weather shows no sign of
slackening. The Germans have again attacked with tanks and infantry in the factory area, after strong artillery and mortar preparation. The Russians, in repelling attacks, inflicted heavy losses, but , after a bitter struggle which repeatedly developed into hand to hand combat, the enemy succeeded in penetrating the outskirts of one factory. Fighting aimed at the annihilation of this enemy group is proceeding. The Russians meanwhile continue to hammer the German left flank, northwest of the city, dislodging the enemy from pillboxes, trenches and other positions. Hard fighting in the Mozdok area appears to be confined to artillery and mortar duels.
