A recent 8.8. C. broadcast to Germany quoted' a Swiss traveller’s account of his visit to the Rhineland, published in a Swiss newspaper. Below is an extract: “Of the gaiety of the Rhineland I saw nothing in the cities. Everywhere careworn faces. Life is no longer easy for these people. They must work ten hours or more daily, and in many cases also at night. Added to this is the concern for relatives at the front. Continual air raids force them to go to shelter, and there is usually no night's rest then. Under-nourishment is becoming apparent, those above the ago of forty-five being especially affected. To my surprise, I often, came across well-fed and well-clothed S.S. men. I had a feeling that the people ufould be pleased if the war were ended, no matter in what way.”
