Lieut. Harold M. Laing, youngest son of Mi’ and Mrs Jas. M. Laing, “The Peaks,” Tinui, is reported to have died of wounds on July 4. Mr C. Robertson, who has been inspector of schools in the Auckland district for seven years, has been appointed acting senior inspector of schools at the Education Department's office in Wellington.
A quiet but pretty wedding took place at St. David’s Church, Woodville, on Tuesday, when Sergeant R. G. Pauling, eldest son of Mr and Mrs G. Pauling, of Masterton, was married to Natalie Viola Hutchinson, youngest daughter of Mrs G. Hutchinson, of Woodville. Probably the oldest New Zealand born married couple, Mr and Mrs John George, of George Street, Onehunga, celebrated the 70th anniversary of their wedding at Auckland on October 19. As both Mr and Mrs George were born in Auckland 97 and 88 years ago respectively, the occasion is claimed to constitute a record for the longest partnership of the oldest living New Zealand-born couple. A veteran of the South African war and the last war, Lieutenant-Colonel Louis Murray Shera, 0.8. E., M.C., of Remuera, Auckland, has died at the age of 63. Lieutenant-Colonel Shera was the third son of the late Mr J. M. Shera, who once represented Auckland City in the House of Representatives. At Gallipoli he did very fine service and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. A complimentary dinner to Mr and Mrs T. F. C. Elliott, the parents of Sergeant Keith Elliott, V.C., was tendered by the Pahiatua County and Borough Councils. Mr J. Robertson. M.P., in whose electorate Sergeant Elliott’s family resides, proposed the toast to the absent V.C. winner. Later, at a V.C. ball sponsored by the Pahiatua Patriotic Committee, an illuminated address was presented on behalf of the combined local bodies to Mr and Mrs Elliott. Congratulatory telegrams were received from the Prime Minister and Minister of Defence. Sir Alfred Ransom, M.P. for Pahiatua, sent an apology for absence.
The Rev. E. C. Light, pastor of the Onehunga Church of Christ, died on Monday. He was born in Feilding 32 years ago, and was educated at Wellington College, After a short period in commerce he began to study for the ministry at the Glen Leith Bible School. Dunedin. His first call was to Motucka, and after remaining there for three years he was appointed to Onehunga in December, 1939. He was a prominent leader in the youth work of his church.
