CHIMNEY REPAIRS
UNDER THE EMERGENCY SCHEME
ACCOUNTS TO BE PRESENTED.
DISCUSSION AT COUNCIL MEETING.
“Why are the accounts for work carried, out on first-line chimneys being held up?” asked Councillor W. Kemp at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. He was assured by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, that the accounts were being completed as rapidly as possible. Councillor Kemp said that the earthquake had occurred four months ago and he was being asked by practically every person he met when the accounts were to be sent out. He added that people wished to pay their bills so that they would know how they stood for having other chimneys restored.
The Town Clerk, Mr O'Hara Smith, said that the costing of the jobs was the work of the Masterton County Council. He had not received the figures, but expected that they would come to hand this week. The administrative charges etc., had been about cleaned up. “We hope the accounts will be out before Christmas,” observed Councillor Kemp. Mr O'Hara Smith: “We are fully prepared at our end.” \ “There is no need for worry, Councillor Kemp and the honest people who wish to pay their accounts are getting interest on the money they are holding to pay for their bills,” said Councillor H. E. Gardner. In reply to Councillor A. D. Low, the Town Clerk explained how the overhead charges were assessed. “The emergency work has only touched on the fringe. People want to pay their accounts and get the rest of their chimneys fixed up,” said Councillor Kemp. “The accounts are being finalised as rapidly as possible,” stated Mr Jordan.
