GENEROUS GIFT

LAND FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS.

GRATITUDE TO LATE SIR R. ANDERSON.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, This Day.

Reference to the death this week of Sir Robert Anderson. Invercargill, who gave an area of land to the Crown for settlement of returned soldiers of this war, was made during the third reading of the Reserves a.nd Other Lands Disposal Bill in the House of Representatives last evening. A former Minister of Lands. Sir Alfred Ransom, spoke of the generous gifts which Sir Robert Anderson had made during his life time, and said that members would appreciate Sir Robert’s thought for the returned men of the Invercargill district. It would be a splendid thing if others were encouraged to emulate the gift and the spirit which prompted it. Associating himself with Sir Alfred Ransom’s remarks, the Prime inister, Mr Fraser, said Sir Robert Anderson was a very gen-erous-minded man who used his wealth for the benefit of his fellow men. On behalf of the Government he expressed his appreciation of Sir Robert's handsome gift and the regret of the House at his passing.
