CARTERTON
OLD RUBBER COLLECTION BY CHILDREN. (“Times-Age” Special.) The children attending the Carterton State School have been very busy collecting old rubber, and have secured nearly three-quarters of a ton of old cycle tires, motor tires and rubber goods of all kinds. The headmaster, his staff and the children are to be congratulated in connection with this war effort.

A Church of England service will be held at Longbush on Sunday, at 2.30 p.m.

Reference was made at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council to the fact that a former councillor, Mr W. A .Renal], was an inmate of the Greytown Hospital, and sympathy was extended to him in his illness. Mr and Mrs E. H. Hawker, of Pembroke Street, Carterton, are visiting Stratford and are the guests of their daughter, Mrs Graham. Boy Scouts. At the weekly card tournament conducted by. the Boy Scouts Committee, the prizes were won as follow: —Ladies: Mrs Verall (Petone) 1, Mrs J. Lenihan 2. Men: Mr Paterson 1, Mr E. Phelps 2. Dance at Belvedere. A dance in aid of patriotic funds will be held in the schoolroom at Belvedere tonight. Good music will be provided, and as the floor is in splendid order patrons should enjoy themselves. A ladies' committee will supervise the supper arrangements. Effluvium From Stream. A report from the Sanitary Inspector, submitted to the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council yesterday stated that he intended to deal with the effluvium from a stream at the Waingawa works. Women’s Institute. The monthly meeting of the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Women’s Institute was well attended, Mrs W. Neilsen presiding. A most interesting demonstration on making bread brooches was given by Mrs Jarrett. The competitions resulted as follows:—Juniors: Scarf, Beth Sadler 1, Jean Conwell 2, Joyce Goodin 3. Trimmed hat, Joyce Goodin 1, Beth Sadler 2. Seniors: Scarf, Mrs W.i Knowles 1, Mrs W. Ticehurst 2, Mrs J. Hicks 3. Trimmed hat, Mrs W. Ticehurst 1, Mrs A. Goodin 2, Mrs R. Gallon 3. Found Not Guilty. James Joseph Cate, a soldier, aged 32, has been found not guilty by a jury in the Wellington Supreme Court on alternative charges of assault with intent to commit rape and indecent assault at Carterton. He was discharged by Mr Justice Blair.
