RED CROSS SOCIETY
COUNTRY DISTRICTS.
MEETING OF SUB-CENTRE.
The monthly meeting of the country districts sub-centre of the Red Cross Society was held in Masterton yestsrday. Mrs A. C. Gawith presided over a good attendance of members. Mrs Gawith stated in her report that Christmas parcels had been sent to Masterton nurses serving with the forces, and a letter of congratulation had been sent to Sister Chisholm. Home nursing classes had commenced in Miss Sutherland’s rooms, being held at 1.30 p.m. each Wednesday, and first aid classes would commence shortly, should the number of pupils warrant the formation of classes. Mrs J. de Castro, convenor of the sewing committee, was congratulated on the work she had done in the collect; ing and distributing of garments to be sewn. Since the earthquake and the loss of their depot, members had don(*j practically all their sewing in theirl own homes, and the following list testified to the loyalty of the members in spite of many difficulties:—l7 dozen triangular bandages, 10 dozen and 8 pillow cases, 5 dozen bottle covers, 4 heavy dressing gowns, 45 pairs pyjamas, 10 orderlies’ gowns, 6 pullovers, 6 pairs hospital stockings. The Kopuaranga Institute, Mesdames Massey, McCaul and Francis (for donations of garments) and all hand sewers were thanked for their assistance.
It was decided that no application should be made for a rebate on the centre levy, and that in future, each country district should make itself responsible for raising the amount necessary for the levy. Arrangements were discussed for a shop day to be held on November 27, in aid of normal activities. It was suggested that each member should contribute one article, and that a feature should be made of a variety of savouries. The papier mache circle hoped to have many useful and pretty things for sale, and required more workers. Any person interested should get in touch with Mrs Kemble Welch (phone 1618). An invitation from the president of the Masterton sub-centre to a next-of-kin of prisoners of war garden party on October 31 was accepted.
