ALLIED FORCES
GATHERING IN EGYPT LARGE-SCALE OFFENSIVE. ANTICIPATED BY ENEMY. , LONDON, October 12. Reports from Cairo state that in the next desert battle, the Axis will have more American weapons and increased manpower of the United Nations against them than at any time in the desert warfare.
The Rome radio says that General Alexander, British Commander-in-Chief in the Middle East, is planning an imminent large-scale desert offensive.
Land operations in Egypt are confined to patrol work, the latest Cairo communique states.
ATTACK ON CRETE MADE BY ALLIED HEAVY BOMBERS. MANY TARGETS STRAFED ON LAND & SEA. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) RUGBY, October 12. A Cairo communique states:—-“Heavy bombers, on the night of October 10, attacked an aerodrome at Tymbaki, in Crete, starting fires. Long-range fighters attacked a schooner north-east of Sidi Barrani, the ship being left enveloped in smoke. Targets on the Sollum-Sidi Barrani Road were also attacked. Heavy bombers claim a direct hit on the stern of a merchantman in an attack yesterday on a south-bound convoy near Crete. An escorting Messerschmitt was shot down into the sea.”
No Allied aircraft were lost in the above operations.
