VIOLENT ATTACKS

MADE BY ENEMY PLANES ON MALTA FIFTEEN DESTROYED & MANY DAMAGED. AT COST OF ONE SPITFIRE. LONDON, October 12. Axis air raids on Malta increased in intensity and violence today but little damage was caused. The raiders were severely punished by fighters.

The island was heavily attacked five times by a large number of enemy planes, most of Avhich were intercepted before they reached their targets. An attempted sixth attack was driven off before the enemy planes came within range of the island’s guns. At least 15 Axis planes were destroyed and many more were damaged. One Spitfire was lost. The raids were the heaviest for nearly throe months. A correspondent says the total of 15 enemy planes destroyed does not include probable casualties, but is limited to planes the R.A.F. definitely destroyed in the battle area.
