Keen racing with several close finishes featured the Otaki Maori Racing Club’s spring meeting held on Saturday in fine hot weather. The track was firm and fast. There was a large attendance and the totalisator investments of £32,122 10s, represented an increase of £10,332 10s on the spring turnover last year There was an accident in the open sprint, when Saint Tor fell and caused the favourite, Moutoa Bond, to lose her rider. The jockeys, A. Waddell and J. Garth, escaped injury. In the same race, W. Carter, rider of Parlato, severely injured a foot through striking the running rail. Results: —

Tuhitarata. in a brilliant Caulfield Cup trial, had an all-the-way win in the second division of the Melbourne Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. He has yet to prove his ability over one mile and a half, but showed no signs of weakening at the end of Saturday’s race. Abazed was second. Great Britain won the first division of the Melbourne Stakes. Skipton showed a return to his best form in a 'brilliant effort in the Stand Handicap,. Fifth last among the 23 runners five furlongs from home, Skipton finished fast and" beat Hestia in the last stride.

Tuhitarata is owned by Mr J. Jameson, of Masterton.

DERBY TO MAIN TOPIC

The favourites were beaten in the three principal events on the opening day of the A.J.C. spring meeting at Randwick on Saturday. Main Tonic brilliantly won the A.J.C. Derby bv five lengths from the favourite. Hall Stand, who failed to stay. Main Topic’s time, 2.31’/a, has been bettered in the three-year-old classic only once in 80 years. The Epsom Handicap was won by Freckles, who beat Merrimba by a neck,, with the favourite, Yaralla, half a length away third.
