THE NAVY’S FIRST SUBMARINE V.C.: Lieut. Commander M. D. Wanklyn, V.C., D.S.O., R.N. Lieut. Commander Wanklyn (officer with beard) was awarded the V.C. for outstanding valour, determination and leadership while in command of the submarine Upholder dining an attack on an enemy troop convoy strongly escorted by destroyers, when the Upholder sank a large troop ship. He has since sunk one destroyer, one U-boat, two troop transports of 19,500 tons each, one tanker and three supply ships.
