BOROUGH AFFAIRS
CARTERTON COUNCIL A GENEROUS GIFT. CLERK’S SALARY INCREASED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last evening. There wore also present: Crs. E. McKenzie. H. Mortenson, W. A. Hart, C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey. L. M. Clark, Howard E. Jackson and Miss O. W. Wolters. An apology for absence was received from Cr. W. R. Harry. At a special meeting a special order in connection with the New Zealand standard by-laws, 1942, was confirmed, on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. McKenzie. The treasurer reported a dr. balance in the District Fund Account of £583 ,6s 2d, and a cr. balance of £366 3s 5d in the Gasworks Account.
The secretary of the Returned Services Association wrote in regard to the plots at the Clareville cemetery, suggesting that a committee meet the Returned Services Association at the cemetery to discuss the same. The matter was referred to the works committee.
The Mayor reported that Mr W. Allen had donated a section of land ;,t West Taratahi for the erection of a building to house the clorination plant. It was decided to forward a letter cf thanks to Mr Allen for his generous giftMrs M. Ellis was granted an extension, cf the water supply to her cowbails. It was decided that Mr H. J. Dwane be advised that if the water connection to his house in Park Road was disconnected, no further installation would be permitted. The clerk was authorised to interview Mr Dwane on the matter. Messrs Hill and Hughes and Gordon Hughan. Ltd., made application for a refund on their dangerous goods licences. It was resolved that the matter be referred to the Minister concerned for consideration.
It was resolved that the owners of all unregistered dogs be sued forthwith.
The Mayor moved, and Cr. Mortenson seconded, that the town clerk’s salary be increased to £4OO. the position to be reviewed in 1943. Councillors expressed appreciation of the service which the town clerk was giving the borough. The motion was carried unanimously. Cr. H. E. Jackson was appointed a member of the Library Committee in place of Cr. Harry. The question of the safety of the well in High Street, opposite Memorial Square, came up for discussion. It was resolved that the matter be referred io the Fire Brigade to report upon to the Works Committee.
