Stalingrad’s defenders, although hard-pressed, have driven back more German attacks, made with large forces of infantry and tanks and supported by aircraft. Fighting is fierce, particularly on the north-western outskirts of the city. ’ In the Mozdok area the outnumbered Russian forces had to give some ground, but reinforcements arrived and the lost positions were recaptured in a counter-attack.
