OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
INSISTENT BIRD VISITOR (To the Editor.) Sir, —This afternoon, while we were in our sitting-room, we noticed a little yellowhammer bird, or something very like one, trying again and again to come into the room from outside. It kept on flinging itself again and again against the glass, not for a minute or two, but for well over an hour, and it had been doing the same thing during the morning, stopping every now and then to rest on a branch outside and sing most sweetly. I have often seen birds dashing themselves against a window when trying to escape from a room, and I have heard of birds trying to come through windows in very cold countries, but I have never seen any bird behave in a similar manner before. There were no flies or insects on the window to attract the bird —only people in the room who might have frightened it away. I mention this incident as some of your readers may be interested, or the little bird may be somebody’s pet. Unfortunately the window cannot be opened and the bird let into the room. It makes no attempt to go to any of the other numerous windows.
I wrote the foregoing yesterday, yet the little bird is still trying to get through the window today.—Yours, etc., L. B. MAUNSELL. Masterton, September 28.
