The Canadian destroyer Ottawa, whose loss was announced on September 21, sank after a four-day running battle with a submarine pack, whicn attacked a convoy in mid-Atlantic. Survivors stated that many of the crew, fatigued by the long fight, supped to their death from rafts. The Ottawa carried 22 British seamen rescued from a torpedoed merchantman. Of the 189 men aboard the destroyer only 76 were saved.
