OIL PROSPECTING

OPERATIONS IN NEW ZEALAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, September 25. Referring to the search for oil in New Zealand, the Minister of Mines, Mr Webb, said that two of the largest and most modern drilling plants in the world started operations this week, one at Cape Terrace, near Kumara, South Island, and the other at Mt Stewart, in the Manawatu district. Both were being operated by the Superior Oil Co. A third large drill was expected to begin boring in a fortnight in the Rangitikei district, near Marton.

Mr Webb said the New Zealand Petroleum Co’s bore at Devon, near New Plymouth, was down 6,000 feet. At Midhirst the Taranaki company had drilled 11,000 feet, the deepest bore in the Southern Hemisphere, but the well proved dry. “We have some of the best drilling experts in the world operating in the Dominion.” the Minister added.
