OBITUARY

MR W. G. WHITEMAN. The death occurred at Lansdowne at an. early hour this morning of an old and highly respected Wairarapa resident in the person of Mr William George Whiteman, of Third Street, at the age of 66 years. The late Mr Whiteman was born at Upper Hutt and came to the Wairarapa at an early age. He was engaged in the sawmilling business all his life. In his youth he was a prominent footballer, being one of the best forwards Wairarapa has produced. He was a member of the 1902 Gladstone team which was one of the best junior teams Wairarapa has everseen and which had no difficulty in winning the junior championship. In its ranks were such prominent Wairarapa players as Sid Mason, Alf. Booth, Hugh Mitchell, Jaro and Sexton. He captained the Carterton junior team when it won the championship in 1904, and was several times selected in the Wairarapa representative team. He subsequently played for the Gladstone, Carterton and Greytown seniors, and was a hard working clean player who was very popular with clubmates and opponents alike. He also took a keen interest in cricket and racing, and at one time owned a number of prominent racehorses. The late Mr Whiteman is survived by his wife, four sons (Messrs R. J., C. A. W. G., and H. A. Whiteman, of Masterton), and three daughters (Mrs R Richards, Masterton, and Misses’ I. E’ and E. M. Whiteman, of Masterton), who will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. THE HON. J. GOODALL, M.L.C.
