GROWING POTATOES

DOUGLAS PARK TO BE PLANTED. BY PRODUCTION COUNCIL. According to information made known to the Masterton Borough Council last night. Douglas Park is to be planted in potatoes by the Vairarapa Primary Production Council. Councillor G. D. Wilson, chairman of the Park Committee, said the committee had given some consideration to the , growing of vegetables. Various plots he understood, had been ottered to the Production Council, which, at that time, had not made up- its mind as .0 what it was doing, particularly in reference to Douglas Parle Councillor Wilson said the committee thought the borough should do something and recommended that it should dertake the planting of Douglas Park with potatoes. It would be a fine gesture on the nart of the borough in connection with the vegetable growing campaign. After the committee meeting. Mr R. W. Kebbell, chairman of the Production Council. had stated that . arrangements had been made by his council .0 plough the area, but Councillor Wilson said he still thought the borough should grow the potatoes. Councillor H. E. Gardner, who, with Mr L. Robinson, had been askdd by the committee to make 'inquiries as to the cost of contract > cultivation, said the cost of getting the ground ready would be £64 10s. and they could not get anyone to plant or till the area. On the other hand, the Production Council could get the labour required where the borough could not. Under those circumstances. it would be better for the Production Council to grow the potatoes.

Councillor Wilson, stating that he was very disappointed at Councillor Gardner's report, moved the adoption of the Park Committee's report, with the deletion of the portion relating to Douglas Park. That course was agreed to.
