ATTACK ON WARDER

IN SOUTHLAND BORSTAL INSTITUTE FAIRLY SERIOUS INJURIES INFLICTED. ASSAILANTS NOW AT LARGE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, This Day. Between 9.30 and 10 o’clock last night George Steele, a warder at the Borstal Institute, was locking two inmates in their cells when they attacked him, and, hitting him over the head with a heavy instrument, knocked him unconscious. The men then escaped. Steele is now an inmate of the Southland Hospital and his condition is fairly serious. The escapees are a Maori, aged 17, and a New Zealander, aged 18. Both were wearing the regulation attire when they escaped. Subsequently it was reported that two motor-cars were missing from different parts of the city. A widespread search by police and prison officials is now in progress.
