CARTERTON

P. & A. SOCIETY REPAIRS TO OFFICE. (“Times-Age” Special.) In the absence of the president, Mr V. L. Robinson presided over a meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society on Saturday. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £154 3s lOd. Votes of condolence were passed to Mr K. G. Fairbrother in a recent bereavement, and to the relatives of the late Mr H. S. Moss, who had been secretary of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society for 13 years. The secretary reported that repairs to the P. and A. Society’s offices in Memorial Square had been approved by the Public Works Department and that the Building Controller’s report would be available this week. He also reported he had wailed upon the Valuation Department in regard to the new valuation of the Society's Showgrounds. It was reported that the New Zealand Kennel Club had appointed Mr Geo. Hunt, of Auckland, as secretary. Appreciation was expressed of the excellent work carried out by the previous secretary, and it was decided to write to him in this connection. It was decided that a circular be forwarded to Wellington firms asking for the usual donations to the Society’s funds and that the secretary interview them later. It was also decided to canvass Carterton and South Wairarapa business firms for donations to the Society s funci. The date of the Carterton canvas was fixed for Friday week. It was resolved that a circular letter be sent to members soliciting their annual subscription.

Brick and Tile Works. Good progress is being made with the re-erection the Amalgamated Brick and Drainpipe Company’s premises in Rutland Road, which were badly damaged in the earthquake.

Collection of Rags. Members of the Carterton Boy Scouts and the Air Scout Troop canvassed the borough on Saturday flufl collected a large quantity of rags that will be useful to the air force units m the cleaning of their machines.

Football Match. A football match on Saturday between the Carterton and Brigade fifteens resulted in a draw. 3 points each. G. Goodin kicked a splendid penalty goal for Carterton in the first spell and the Brigade registered a try in the second half. ■

Bulb Day.

The annual “bulb day” held at Mr and Mrs W. Henry Booth’s homestead, “Harwarden,” Carterton, on Saturday, was well attended by the public. This annual event was instituted many "years ago by Mr'and Mrs Booth, who have for years'thrown (hejr grounds open to the public for the benefit of the Carterton Pjqnket Society. The charge for admission (is 6d), with the right to pick b.ulbs, resulted in a substantial amount being secured for the funds of the Society.

Patriotic Dance.

The weekly dance conducted by the Carterton Patriotic Committee and the Y.M.C.A., held in the State Theatre on Saturday night was well attended. The music was provided by the orchestras of Messrs Tom Udy and F. Pool, and extras wore played by Messrs Hemi (2) and a soldier. ‘Mr P. Beere was M.C., and the supper arrangements were controlled by the Citizens’ Committee.
