LAVAL TRUCULENT

TOWARDS CATHOLIC CHURCH DETERMINED TO PERSECUTE J EWS. APPEAL TO MEDIEVAL STANDARDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.35 a.m.) LONDON, September 17. Laval has ordered Father Chaillet, a member of the staff of Cardinal Garlier, Archbishop of Lyons, to be confined to his residence as a reprisal for ■Catholic opposition to the round-up of foreign Jews. The British United Press correspondent on the French frontier says: “Laval, in a statement, said: “No man, nothing shall sway me from a determination to rid France of foreign Jews. I take no lessons in humanitarianism from any country. Catholic cardinals and. bishops have intervened, but everyone is master of his own trade. They handle religion, I handle Government affairs. I am only applying to the Jews the same treatment as Catholic churchmen prescribed centuries ago.”
