ATTACK ON BURMA

SPECULATION AS TO ALLIED

PLANS

AKYAB AS POSSIBLE BASE.

ADVANTAGE IN AIR WARFARE

(By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 17. Increasing Allied air attacks on Burmese bases, with the encl of the Monsoon, have forced the Japanese hastily to improve their defences, says a correspondent. Experts do not believe that a major Japanese air offensive against Indi?, is imminent. On the contrary, reports received indicate that the Japanese fear that the Allies have selected Akyab as the base for an early recapture of Burma in a combined ■ counter-offensive by land, sea and air. Furthermore, experts agree that the Allies at present are holding most of lhe strategic cards in air warfare on the Assam and Burma front, while the Japanese probably are unable to maintain the runways and other installations needed in operating heavy bombers against India.
