SIGNS OF COLLAPSE
IN JAPANESE DEFENCE OF KINHWA. MR CHURCHILL’S MESSAGE. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) RUGBY, September 16. In the important battle for Kinwha, the capture of which by the Chinese is necessary in order that the full benefits of their recent successes in the Chekiang Province may be realised, renewed activity in the neighbourhood of Lanchi, north-west of the city, is reported. A Chungking communique says the latest reports from the front suggest that enemy resistance in this key position now shows signs of collapsing. In a message to General Chiang Kai-shek, thanking him for his message on the anniversary of the outbreak of war, and expressing appreciation of the Chinese struggle against the aggressor for more than five long years, Mr Churchill declares that victory is certain and that when that day dawns, the British people will be proud to acclaim the Chinese as fellow architects of victory.
