SOLDIERS’ SETTLEMENT

PLANS IN NEW SOUTH WALES. NEW PERPETUAL LEASE. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1015 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Returned soldier settlers will be given a new perpetual leasehold oi their land at an annual rental oi z 2 per cent of the capital value, under a Bill, to be introduced in the New South Wales State Parliament. Announcing this the Minister of Lands, Mr J. M. Tully, said: “The best land in the State must be set aside for returned soldier settlers.” In its scheme for providing land for post-war settlement, he added, the Government was looking to the larger holdings, many of which were well suited for closer settlement. The Government' was committed to a graduated land tax, based on the unimproved value and increasing each year, on all large estates. Exemption for estates of lesser value than £5,000 unimproved value was proposed and the tax would bear lightly on estates up to £25,000 improved value. The primary object was not revenue from taxation but the subdivision of large estates and the promotion of settlement.
