IN STRONG FORCE
ATTACK ON WILHELMSHAVEN TWO AIRCRAFT MISSING, BOSTONS BOMB CHERBOURG IN DAYLIGHT. LONDON, September 15. Boston bombers, escorted by fighters, attacked shipping at Cherbourg this afternoon, without loss. Last night the R.A.F. in strong force attacked the naval base at Wilhelmshaven, the German North Sea U-boat base. Many large fires were left burning, a number round the dock area. Four thousand pound bombs were seen to crash down on the targets. This was the eighth attack on western Germany this month and the 68th raid on Wilhelmshaven. Two R.A.F. bombers are missing.
TERRIFIC EXPLOSION
OBSERVED AT ENEMY NAVAL BASE. OIL DEPOT MAY HAVE GONE UP. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) RUGBY. September 15. A terrific explosion, far larger than could have been caused by the bursting of any single bomb, was reported by many of the air crews who were over the naval base at Wilhelmshaven last night. The captain of a Stirling said the explosion could not have been caused by a four-thousand-pounder. “I saw several of those burst in the target area in the normal way,” he said. ‘'There was an astonishing red flash and then volumes of black smoke. I thought it might have been an oil storage depot.” —
