RUSSIAN CHURCH
DENUNCIATION OF GERMAN INVADERS. PRAYERS FOR SUCCESS OF RED ARMY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, September 14. The Moscow Patriarchate has published an anthology of essays, documents and photographs regarding the activities of the Russian Orthodox Church during the war and the suffering of congregations at the hand of the invaders. Acting-Patriarch Sergii said: “This is primarily the answer to the pretentions of the Fascists that they are undertaking a ‘crusade’ for the liberation of the Russians and the Orthodox Church. The Church’s attitude to the Fascist crusaders is not ambiguous. The crusaders, drenched with Russian blood, have defiled the sacred possessions, destroyed the monuments and tortured the people. “The Orthodox Church could not accept benefits from the hands of such an enemy. It is clear that the Church once and for all must associate itself with the care of the whole congregation and seek to save its children.”
The anthology includes a call by Acting-Patriarch Sergii to Russian Christians to defend Russia, and for prayers for the success of the Red Army, and also describes the first wartime Easter, when Moscow permitted the faithful to crowd the capital’s churches.
