BRITISH LANDING ATTEMPT IN TOBRUK AREA WITH AIR AND NAVAL SUPPORT. ATTACK SAID TO HAVE FAILED. LONDON, September 14. In Egypt there is no news of bigscale operations. An Italian communique today reports an attempted British landing in the Tobruk area. It was made, the enemy report states, after a prolonged air attack, with the support of cruisers and destroyers. The attack was unsuccessful.
In operations over the battle area yesterday British fighters shot down at least six Axis machines.
