The Secretary for War, Mr Stimson, the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, General Marshall, and other officials, Sent messages to General John Joseph Pershing who commanded the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe in the last war, on his 82nd birthday. General Pershing replied: My birthday is happy because of the knowledge that the building of an American victory is entrusted to strong hands, clear minds, and resolute hearts.”
