VAIN ATTEMPT TO HALT CHINESE IN EASTERN CHEKIANG. INVADERS FURTHER MENACED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 1. Chinese forces, storming across Chekiang, have intercepted and routed Japanese reinforcements, rushed forward in a frantic effort to halt Genera! Chiang Kai-shek’s forces approaching Kinhwa, reports the Associated Press of America's Chungking correspondent. The Chinese ambushed the Japanese and are moving up the railway between Kinhwa and Lanchi, while another Chinese column has advanced from Tangki to Kinhwa. A Chinese military spokesman said Kinhwa’ was menaced by a nutcracker offensive along two railways. The Japanese forces have been cleared entirely from the southern areas of the Chekiang Province. The Lishui and Chuhsien airfields are now both in Chinese hands and are within bombing range of Japanese cities. bombing in burma' R.A.F. AND AMERICAN ATTACKS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) RUGBY, September 1. A New Delhi communique states that in an offensive reconnaissance in Burma on Sunday the R.A.F. bombed and machine-gunned Kalewa, on the Chindwin River. Hits were scored on buildings and river boats. All the R.A.F. planes returned safely. A Chungking message says American bombers attacked Myitkima, in Burma, on Monday, starting large fires. Barracks, warehouses and railway buildings were the targets.
