No material changes have taken place on the front, according to the morning Soviet communique. The Germans still appear to be held on the Stalingrad front, though they are continuing to attack strongly in one sector in the north-west. The Germans are reported to have suffered enormous casualties in men. and material in this sector. On another sector of this front the Germans attacked with 64 tanks, nine of which were put out of action, the rest withdrawing. The most dangerous sector is that north-east of Kotelnikovo, where the Germans are exercising terrific pressure and in one sector have advanced. A Moscow report says the Soviet troops are continuously being reinforced and that, as a result of .the Italian defeat yesterday, the Russians retook five settlements. Very fierce fighting continues south of Krasnodar, where the Germans are striking towards the Black Sea. One locality has been reoccupied by Cossack cavalry. In the far south the Germans have been held up on an unnamed river in the Mozdok area. Moscow says enemy ships are appearing in increasing numbers in the Sea of Azov and are being engaged by a Soviet flotilla. Fighting is still raging for the eastern shores. The Stockholm representative of the “Daily Express” reports that a German column consisting of several hundred tanks, supported by a great number of Stukas and fresh infantry regiments, advanced four miles toward Stalingrad along the Kotelnikovo Stalingrad railway. The Germans claim they have reached the last defence belt 15 miles from the city's centre. The Germans were severely mauled during this advance by artillery and Voroshilov tanks, and at some points they lost 80 per cent, of their men and tanks. The latest messages state that Marshal Timoshenko has sent in fresh reserves, who are holding well. MORE LANDINGS ATTEMPTED BY GERMANS.' ON BLACK'. SEA COAST. LONDON. September 1. Moscow reports that-the enemy are attempting to make trooplandings on the Black Sea coast on the Soviet flank defending the naval bases. The German News Agency claims the capture of the port of Anapa, 25 miles north of Novorossisk and just below Taman Peninsula. “German troops have broken through to the Black Sea coast,” it saicl.
