TREMENDOUS CALL
ON AMERICAN MANPOWER FOR THE ARMY AND NAVY. ENLISTMENT OF OLDER MEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 28. The “Wall Street Journal’s” Washington correspondent says the projected Army and Navy combat strength in 1944 exceeds the estimated number of men between 18 to’4s years physically fit to fight, hence Mr Stimson’s decision to enlist older men (between the ages of 45 and 50). The proposed Army and Navy strength, necessarily secret, has been boosted higher than any figure yet published. The United States replaces Russia as the anti-Axis recruiting station. Job and dependency deferments will disappear. By 1944, fitness will be almost the only test. The order of induction is firstly, the remaining single men, secondly, married men with no children, and thirdly, married men with one child. Within each group war workers will be called up last.
