Frost in Masterton. A frost of 5.6 degrees was registered in Masterton this morning. Public Works Employees. There has been a steady rise in the number of men employed on undertakings directed by the Public Works Department as the year has progressed, the number employed in June being 15,627 compared with 11,094 in January. The June figure is the highest since November, 1940, according to returns published in the Abstract of Statistics. Live Stock Statistics. The preliminary totals for the livestock population of the Dominion for 1942 show little variation from the final totals for 1941, published in the Monthly Abstract of the Census and Statistics Department. Horses and dairy cattle show slight decreases, while sheep and lambs are slightly higher in number. Pigs also show a decrease. Dance at Masonic Hall. An enjoyable dance was held in the Masonic Hall last night by the State Kitchenette Social and Sports Club. There was a large attendance of dancers. Frank Pool’s Orchestra played the dance music and extras were con- [ tributed by Mr D. Callan. Private Bruce McHattie was M.C. A song was given by Miss Wairaka Nini. New potatoes were sold yesterday at Is 4d per lb., and; for green peas the public was being asked to pay Is 8d per lb. Fertiliser Rationing. A reminder is given that applications for extra fertiliser must be made by Monday, August 31. It is emphasised that the only ground for application for an increase is that the applicant used organic fertiliser for top-dressing pasture during the period from June 1, 1939 to May 31, 1941. The present regulations make no provision for applications for increased allowances on the grounds of hardship or the recent, purchase of property. Conversion of Cars. Appearing for sentence on 30 charges of converting motor-cars valued at £2729 and one of theft, a boot factory worker, Andrew Robert Victor Hinkes, aged 17, was admitted to two years’ probation by Mr Morling, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Auckland. Accused was also ordered to pay £25 in restitution to the owners of different cars. It was stated that his accomplice, aged 16, had been sentenced to two years 1 Borstal detention when ’ he appeared in the Children’s Court. Air Training Corps.
