MEATLESS DAY

CONSIDERED IN UNITED STATES BIG AID TO SHIPPING ECONOMY. EFFECT ON NEW ZEALAND & AUSTRALIA. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) WASHINGTON, August 23. President Roosevelt stated that the Government was considering instituting one meatless day a week, in addition to the Fridays which Catholics already observed. He said a meatless day would release 30 to 40 cargo ships now transporting meat from Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. These could be diverted to the transportation oi: tanks, planes and munitions if meatless days were instituted. Asked if this would have any ill effect on the economy of Australia and New Zealand, Mr Roosevet replied in the negative. He explained that he had discussed with Mr Fraser (New Zealand Premier) methods which might be employed in bringing food supplies. At present many ships carrying military supplies to Australia and New Zealand might bring back a larger amount of food. Alternatively, more food might be stored.
