MR H. M. BODDINGTON

RECOGNITION OF SERVICES TO TENNIS. MADE PRESIDENT OF THE NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. Mr H. M. Boddington. of Masterton. was elected president of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association at the annual meeting of that body in Wellington on Thursday night. Over a period of some 26 years Mr Boddington has given yeoman service to the sport of tennis and has laboured with unselfish enthusiasm in its promotion. For a great part of that time he was secretary of the Masterton Lawn Tennis Club and he has been for many years secretary of the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association and organiser of its popular tournaments. He has been a delegate to the New Zealand Council for about twenty years. His activities on behalf of tennis have gained him the friendship of outstanding players in many parts of the world and he has been instrumental in securing visits to this country by not a few of these players. Mr Boddington has given much time and effort also to the promotion of junior tennis. Three years ago he was manager of a team of New Zealand boys which played a scries of matches in Sydney.

“You’ll probably remember the pencil racket. The Jap offered the world a lead pencil made of high quality wood and graphite, at a third of the price other countries demanded. Billions of gross were unloaded before it was discovered that there was only one inch of lead in both ends of the pencil —the middle was dud. He got his millions, made his quick profit, and the morality of the thing just didn't count. Now, in making war, he thinks he can get away with the same tactics.” —Captain Mehan, in a 8.8. C. broadcast overseas.
