Men Released From Camp.
Auother forty men were released from camp to take up farm work, by the Wairarapa Armed Forces Appeal Board, at a sitting held in Masterton yesterday afternoon. Bicycle Tires and Tubes. Further applications for bicycle tires and tubes were considered by the Wairarapa Tire and Tube Committee, at a meeting held last night. It was announced that as a result of representations made to the Factory Controller, a 25 per cent increase in the district’s quota had been agreed to. The secretary, Mr R. Jordan, pointed out this morning that the application forms for tires and tubes must be filled in by the applicant himself. Otherwise, the application will not be entertained. Wages and Costs. ““The Government is working on a plan to stabilise all wages and costs, and that, I think, will be a big factor in all our future negotiations,” said the Minister of Agriculture and Marketing. Mr Barclay, addressing the electoral committee of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in Wellington yesterday. “The more stable we can keep our internal economy at present, the better will be our position at the end of the war. If we allowed prices to soar and then flop back we would not add to our strength. The only men who would benefit would be speculators and-those in between the producer and the consumer.” Telegraph Pole Smashed. An army car crashed into a telegraph pole on Opaki Road, near the Masterton borough boundary last night, breaking the pole about 18 inches above the ground and carrying it some distance along the road. The three occupants of the car had a miraculous escape from injury. The driver of the car was Captain J. E. Wright and one of the occupants was Lieutenant P. J. Borthwick. The ear was severely damaged. It is stated ".hat the car failed to take the bend in the road, with the result that it hit a pole on the side of the highway.
