DAYLIGHT ATTACKS
ON ENEMY AIRFIELDS AT ABBEVILLE AND ON SHIPPING OFF DIEPPE. HITS SCORED ON FOUR VESSELS. LONDON. August 27. Soon after noon today squadrons of Boston bombers attacked the enemy airfield at. Abbeville. Bombs were dropped in the target area. One bomber was shot down by anti-aircraft gun fire, but all the members of the crew except one were rescued. The bombers were escorted by a strong force of fighters and many air combats took place during the raid. Three enemy fighters were destroyed. Nine British fighters are missing. This morning Hurricanes defied the guns of Dieppe and attacked an enemy convoy off the harbour. Four out of five ships were hit. The Germans were taken completely by surprise. Three of the damaged vessels were of 1500 tens. The shore batteries did not open up until it was too late. Bombs were dropped on the southeast coast of England. There were a few casualties and some damage. One German raider was shot clown last night. BATTERIES DEFIED SEVERE DAMAGE TO THREE ENEMY SHIPS. ATTACKING PLANES RETURN SAFELY. Three enemy ships, each of 1,500 tons, were severely damaged this morning when Hurricane bombers of the Fighter Command attacked a convoy of five vessels lying off Dieppe Harbour, right under the shore batteries. One smaller ship was also hit. Despite heavy flak from the shore, all the planes returned safely.
