FARM RESIDENCES

LABOUR FOR ESSENTIAL REPAIRS. ASSURANCE FROM MINISTER. As the result of representations macle by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, an assurance has been given by Mr Polson, Minister of National Production, that carpenters will be available in the Masterton district to restore farm homesteads damaged by the recent severe earthquake. Mr Jordan stated this morning that the committee set up to deal with chimney repairs was apprehensive once the state of emergency ceased, that there would be insufficient carpenters left in the district to carry out necessary repairs to houses in country areas. Mr Jordan stated that he agreed with that view and took up the matter with the local production council and with the authorities in Wellington. The following telegram had now been received from Mr Polson: "As many carpenters as possible will be kept in the Masterton area to enable essential work such as was asked for by the Mayor yesterday to be gone on with.” Mr Jordan said that advice was very satisfactory, as there was a possibility, with the shearing season approaching, that accommodation would not be available for the men, as m many cases the farmers were obliged tc- live in the men’s quarters, on account of earthquake damage to their residences, some of which had been rendered almost uninhabitable.
