Mr N. W. Carpenter, Mayor of Waipukurau, is on a visit to Masterton, where many years ago he resided. The Hon. P. K. Paikea, Minister in Charge of the Maori War Effort, is indisposed and confined to his home in Auckland. Mi- J. P. McMahon-Box has been appointed Resident Commissioner of Niue, Judge of the High Court of the Cook Islands, and Collector of Customs and Postmaster at Niue. The following passed the Home Nursing examination held recently at Pongaroa:—Misses M. Meech and M. Arnaboldi (honours), Mesdames R. Hollis, G. Jensen and R. D, McGregor, and Misses E. and D. Matthews. Messrs T. A. Duncan, Hunterville, and J. Begg, Dunedin, were yesterday re-elected producers’ representatives on the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. A. Briscoe Moore, North Auckland, was the other candidate. The death has occurred following a long illness of Lieutenant-Colonel James Armstrong, Dannevirkc. He was educated at the Bishop's School, Nelson, and also at Nelson College, from where he went to Otago University to study medicine, and later to University College, London. On his return to New Zealand in 1905 he took up a sheep farm at Glengarry, and afterward acquired Maungataniwha station, Wairoa, which he owned at the time of his death. During the Great War he saw service in Egypt. On returning to New Zealand he commanded the Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. LieutenantColonel Armstrong leaves a widow, one son, and two daughters. There is one brother, Mr Frank Armstrong, Akitio, and two sisters, Mrs E. Wardell, Masterton, and Mrs M. Henry, Auckland.
