SOME ANXIETY

CAUSED BY ENEMY THRUST FROM KOTELNIKOVO. RUSSIANS HOLDING DON. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) RUGBY, August 23. While the Russians seem to be holding the Don west of Stalingrad, some anxiety is felt about the progress of the latest German thrust towards the city from Kotelnikovo, which 'was reported from Soviet headquarters last night. A supplementary communique stated: “In the region of Kletskaya, Soviet troops counter-attacked and dislodged the enemy from key positions. South-east of Kletskaya the Russians continue stubborn fighting against forces which have attempted to cross the Don. One group crossed, but was routed. North-east of Kotelnikovo the Germans started an advance in one sector with large forces and succeeded in driving a wedge into the defences at one place. Heavy fighting is going on. In another place a strong enemy attack was repulsed, a Rumanian battalion being annihilated.”
