ATTACK ON EMDEN
MADE BY TWO WELLINGTONS IN DAYLIGHT EXPLOSIONS IN DOCK AREA. ENEMY FIGHTER BEATEN OFF. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) RUGBY, August 23. Just after midday today two Wellingtons attacked the port of Emden. Coming down to 4,000 feet they bombed through a gap in the clouds. Bursts were seen among buildings in the dock area. On the way back, one Wellington was attacked nine times by a Messerschmitt 109 and during, the last attack the Wellington’s rear-gunner got in a long burst of fire. Fragments were blown off the Messerschmitt. The duel ended when contact was lost.
