The engagement is announced of Maida Helen, only daughter of Mr and Mrs R. C. Andrew, Olive Street, Masterton, to Norman Olaf, second son of Mr and Mrs O. H. Torwick, Nursery Road, Masterton. The death has occurred of Mr James Siddells, former detective-sergeant and Wanganui city councillor, in his eighty-third year. He is survived by five daughters and two sons. One son is Captain K. Siddells, mayor of Pahiatua and a former All Black. The funeral of the late Mrs R. W. MacLaren took place at the Masterton Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The late Mi’s McLaren was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs G. E. Chamberlain, pioneer settlers of the district. She is survived by her husband, two daughters and three grandchildren, as well as three sisters and one brother. Mr T. G. Chamberlain, Pownall Street, Masterion, is a brother, and Mesdames E. S. Janett (Hawke’s Bay), A. E. Dimock (Wellington) and C. M. Sykes (Upper Plain) are sisters. The death occurred last Thursday night at Island Bay of Mr Walter P. Bastin. Mr Bastin, who was 73 years of age, served his apprenticeship to the engineering trade at Messrs S. Luke and Sons’ foundry, after which he was employed in the engineering shop of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company. Mr Bastin was a member of the old Wellington Amateur Operatic Society, being specially good in character parts. Later, Mr Bastin left Wellington- for Sydney to go upon the professional stage, and toured the Commonwealth with several companies, including one headed by the late Miss Nellie Stewart.
