CARTERTON
BIRTHDAY PARTY MR W. B. ALLEN HONOURED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The card tournament and dance held last evening in the band room, Carterton, in honour of the patron of the Carterton Silver Band, Mi’ W. B. Allen, who celebrated his 95th birthday yesterday, was a most successful gathering. the hall being packed. Prior to the commencement of the proceedings the band, under the conductorship of Bandmaster W. Spooner, played three selections which were much appreciated. Mr A. Kay was M.C. The music was provided by Mrs Rogers of Dalefield. The winners at cards were Mr and M i- s P Edwards. Mr P. Beere referred to Mr Alien’s birthday and to the continued keen interest he took in the Carterton Band. He asked the chairman of the Band Committee, Mr J. M. Nicholls, to address those assembled. Mr Nicholls congratulated their guest upon reaching his 95th birthday and trusted he would be spared to see many more. He said Mr Allen was a foundation member of the band, and the committee was proud to have Mr Allen as their patron. Mr H. T. Ray (secretary) then read several congratulatory telegrams and letters from many parts of New Zealand. Mr Allen suitably returned thanks. During the evening Mr and Mrs W. Spooner were presented with an eiderdown quilt in appreciation of their many years’ service to the band. Mr Spooner had been a member for 4 0. years and was now its bandmaster. Mr •Spooner returned thanks for the very serviceable gift. Supper was presided over by a committee of ladies. Personal Items. Able Seaman "Buster” Manley is home on leave and is staying with his parents, Mr and Mrs C. Manley, Pembroke Street. Ptes. G. Udy, J. Fitzgerald, B. A.plin and A. Sewell left for camp today. School Holidays. The State schools will close tomorrow for the mid-winter holidays. Social Gathering Postponed. Owing to the guests being unable to attend the social at the Clareville Hall in their honour on Friday night, the date has been changed to Monday next. Carterton Racing Club. A meeting of the stewards of the Carterton Racing Club will be held on Friday next.
