The resignation on account of illhealth of Miss E. P. Tennent, com-mandant-in-chief of the Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachments, was announced at the annual conference of the N.Z. Red Cross Society at Wellington. A motion of regret and appreciation of her services was passed. It was later announced that her Excellency Lady Newall had consented to become commandant-in-chief. Miss H! I. Crooke was elected officer in charge of V.A.D.’s.

The funeral took place on Monday at Mauriceville West of the late Mrs Elizabeth Lehmstedt. The services at the residence and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. A. Christiansen, of Palmerston North. The pallbearers were Messrs L. Hood, A. Pain, P. McKeown, G. S. Nielson, W. H. Bird, and H. C. Mortensen . Among others, wreaths were sent by the pupils of the Mauriceville West Sunday School and the Women’s Institute.

A scientific organisation conferred an unusual honour on a layman last night when the New Zealand Society of Animal Production at its annual meeting in Wellington elected Mr J. M. Ranstead. of Matangi, Waikato, a life member in recognition of his services in the field of animal production. 'The president, Professor C. P. McMeekan, said Mr Ranstead was the founder of their organisation. He had contributed a great deal to animal breeding and was one of the founders of the Shorthorn Breeding Society. He was also a keen practical breeder and one of the soundest students of animal genetics. Professor’ McMeekan continued that Mr Ranstead was an old diploma graduate of Lincoln College and a Bledisloe Medal winner.
