LOCAL AND GENERAL
Bequest of £3OOO. A bequest of £3OOO has been received by the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society in accordance with the will of the late Miss Helen Pattie, Nelson. . Hearing aid in Schools, The Wellington Education Board will make a survey of the number of hard-of-hearing children in schools in the city area- in order to determine whether the provision of special equipment for them is warranted. It is not proposed to establish a special class for these children. School Journal. Request was recently made to the Education Department by the Wellington Education Board for priority in the issue of school journals over less important publications' which were still permitted despite the shortage of paper. The board has now been informed that it is hoped to have a supply of paper available shortly sufficient to meet the position and overtake the delay in two issues of the journals. Internationa! Red Cross. A recommendation to the incoming executive of the N.Z. Red Cross Society that the sum of £5OO in New Zealand currency should be paid to the International Red Cross Committee in Geneva was adopted at the annual conference of the society yesterday. In moving the adoption Canon R. G. Coats, Auckland, said that the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva was performing a magnificent voluntary service to the world. Something should be done, he said, to show appreciation of the vast work which was being done with such expedition and with such marvellous skill . It was the least that could be done and was a gesture of goodwill. Educational Buildings, Grants for the maintenance of buildings during the financial year ending March 31, 1943, total £16,753 for the Wellington Education Board. This is a reduction of £622 on the amount made available to the board by the Education Department last year. The chairman, Mr W. V. Dyer, at the meeting of the board yesterday, said they would have to accept the reduced amount with regret, but immediately circumstances permitted they should ask not only for its restoration to the original figures, but for an increase. The board was only now just getting its schools up to a reasonable standard after the deplorable setback suffered during the depression years. Though they did not wish to be obstructive in wartime, they could not but view the position with some alarm.
