ARMED FORCES

21,000 ADDITIONAL MEN TO BE CALLED UP AT EARLY DATE INDUSTRIAL REORGANISATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Additional men are to be called up for service with the armed forces at an early date. The Minister of National Service. Mr Broadfoot stated last night that this list would contain the names of men of 35. 36 and 37 years of age, with children, together with the inflow into classes previously called up for military service.

“Approximately 21.000 men will be called on this occasion, and their names will be gazetted on September 15," said the Minister. “The men will be medically examined as soon as possible, but no indication can at present be given when they will be required to enter camp.

“The withdrawal of further men from industry to enter the forces will necessitate the applications of measures of industrial reorganisation designed to offset these losses insofar as they affect the more essential industries, and further and more drastic curtailments of non-essential industries and services are inevitable.

“Up to the end of July last, more than 5000 persons had been directed into essential industries, while more than 2000 essential workers who would ordinarily have left these industries were prevented from doing so in terms of the national service emergency regulations. In order to ensure that these and related measures for rationalisation and reorganisation of industry and mobilisation of the Dominion’s latent 1 labour resources, are carried out with the maximum effectiveness, the War Administration has plans in hand at the present time involving a complete examination of industries and services. This examination will be merely the prelude to a further acceleration of measures designed to meet the needs of the armed forces while at the same time maintaining those industries and services which are essential to the community.” .
